This project is focused on the development of sensor technology and inventory management hardware for monitoring and managing fishing gear/traps. Specifically aimed to develop technologies that will allow for: - A robust method (adapting near field communication technologies) for the automated tracking and inventory of commercial lobster and crab traps. - The tracking/retrieval of lost lobster and crab traps that are found/recovered. - A method for logging viable catch weights on a trap or trawl-by-trawl basis (with geolocation tagging/mapping).

Development of a Smart Pressure Activated Buoy Beacon$75.0Kvalue2023start2024end

The Client's state of the art rope-on-command (ROC) gear effectively removes all vertical lines and buoys from the water column and provides fixed trapped crab and lobster fishermen a method of fishing that poses no entanglement risks to marine mammals, most notably the critically endangered North Atlantic Right Whale. The primary goal of this project is to develop an innovative enhancement to this ROC technology that increases the visibility of the buoy system once it is deployed and reaches the ocean surface. This addresses concerns from fishermen that the existing buoy is hard to locate in
