The future generation of low-carbon concrete: Using CO2 to make high-performance, sustainable cement
This project is mostly related to technology assessment.
Our novel technology platform unlocks new advances in strength and durability for cement replacements. By permanently storing CO2 in industrial byproducts and natural materials—from coal plants, glass manufacturing, mine sites, and more—we are improving performance and lower emissions. We work directly with cement and concrete producers to utilize the CO2 they’re already capturing onsite for our processes. We also reduce second-order CO2 emissions by removing the need to import expensive SCM feedstocks from overseas and we use local wastes instead, such as steel slag. Carbon Upcycling’s SCMs d
This project is mostly related to technology demonstration.
This project is to conduct a FEED on the production and use of alternate material to fly ash, in this case pozzolans.
As part of the international cleantech project, “Accelerating Commercialization: Demonstration of Canadian CCU Technology ” .CU’s carbon capture and utilization (CCU) technology enables the production of high-performance supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs), enabling concrete companies to reduce cement usage while maintaining necessary concrete strength.
CUT intends to carry out mechanical redesign and scale-up its MACE reactor to semi-batch and continuous operations to meet global customer demand.
CUT has developed a continuous lab-scale, plug flow reactor to effectively reacts SCMs with CO2 from point source emissions such as flue gas. CUT intends to carry out additional scale up work such as mechanical design, engineering, and industrial R&D to scale up the design to hundreds of kilogram scale at the Alberta Carbon Conversion Technology Center and leverage the outcomes for plant deployments starting in 2024.
Carbon Upcycling Technologies is working to develop a large-scale prototype molten carbonate electrolysis cell (MCEC) to produce carbon nanomaterials and oxygen from CO2 using a low-cost molten salt system, capable of semi-continuous operation in a field setting with a point source emission. The MCEC prototype will be developed simultaneously with further expansion of CUT's primary process, culminating in a field demonstration of both technologies at the ACCTC (Alberta Carbon Conversion Technology Center) in Winter 2020.
The funding provided from the IAP program is to assist innovative, early stage small-and medium-sized enterprises that are unable to access existing COVID-19 business support.
Oco, a Carbon Upcycling Company, is a circular material ingredient organization with a flagship carbon capture and utilization material. We are looking to identify co-innovation partners who have material research and development capacity, including equipment and expertise in textile development that are interested in the carbon capture and utilization market. We are also looking for partners who sell consumer goods and utilize carbon-intensive materials that are interested in decarbonization through material innovation.
Carbon Upcycling provides a technology that creates high-performance materials using CO2. We have identified several potential co-innovation partners (CEMEX, LafargeHolcim, Heidelberg, and CRH) who are looking for alternative, cementitious feedstocks, have set decarbonization strategies and are committed to being a part of the circular economy in the cement and concrete industry.
The Project will support development of intellectual property capacity within the Firm.
The purpose of this CanExport Innovation (CXI) grant agreement is to support organizations and to build on targeted relationships between Canadian companies/researchers and key organizations in other countries to allow them to proceed with formal discussions to initiate collaboration(s) on future international R&D initiatives that could lead to commercialization of Canadian technologies.
The project will further expand the scale of work Carbon Upcycling is conducting in exploring in the use of its carbon platelets in concrete and polymers, building on the positive results accrued previously since August 2014. CUT intends to design, analyze, and commission its Zeta reactor to produce sufficient quantities (>1 tonne/day) for large-scale trials and initiate market adoption of its nanoparticles in the concrete and polymer industries.
