Lightweighting automotive structures using pultruded composites and injection overmoulding$178Kvalue2022start2026end

The automotive sector is one of the largest sources of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Canada. Composite materials, blending reinforcing fibres with polymers, can provide the same function as metallic materials at a fraction of the weight. Use of composite materials can thereby improving the overall energy efficiency of a vehicle and reduce its GHG emissions. However, current production rates of composite materials cannot match the demands of the automotive industry. The objective of this project is to develop a process for manufacturing injection moulded structures that are reinforced local

Use of AI to speed up numerical simulations: application to the design of superconducting tapes for energy and medicine domains$158Kvalue2020start2023end

Ceramic high temperature superconductors (HTS) are now routinely fabricated in the form of long lengths of tapes (several km), making it possible to envision large-scale superconducting applications. One issue concerns the physical properties of those HTS tapes, which can vary over length scales shorter than 1 millimeter, and lead to destructive hot spots in some circumstances. A strategy to find a solution to this problem at the design stage is to simulate the complete transient electrothermal behavior of long lengths of HTS tapes in real operating conditions while retaining their microscopic
