This project is mostly related to technology demonstration.
Development of a briquetting and biocoking process from black spruce wood planks, and comparison of the performance of briquettes derived from forest biomass and that given by fossil coal in the ferrosilicon smelting process.
The production of ferroalloy requires the addition of reducing coal, a product obtained from fossil resources. The company, as an eco-responsible company, has decided to minimize its carbon footprint by replacing fossil coal with biocarbon produced from wood residues. The company aims to produce different ranges of biocarbon to meet the needs in its ferrosilicon production facilities.
The company recently built a new pilot plant in Saguenay that will produce biocarbon briquettes from sawmill residues. These briquettes will be used to replace fossil coal used in the ferroalloy manufacturing process. The company will hire a chemist to join the research and development team. His mandate will be to study alternative feedstocks as well as the pretreatment of feedstocks for the biocarbon production process.
This project aims to provide a highly qualified resource to contribute to the technological development of the biocarbon production process in order to improve its efficiency.
