Development of a sustained-release, antibiotic drug product that is more effective than the current treatments for the prophylactic prevention of post-surgical infections will be advanced through preclinical studies towards clinical trials.
This project will determine the safety, metabolism and clearance of the novel coating, in particular the polymer component, of the firm's extended-release technology platform through in vivo studies to identify the mode and rate of elimination of the coating from the body after administration.
An antibiotic film product will be developed that exhibits sustained-release delivery of high local concentrations of antibiotic at surgical sites for extended duration with limited systemic exposures and effective in experimental models of post-operative infection.
