Canadian Arctic ACE-OSIRIS Validation Campaign: for 2025-2027$705Kvalue2025start2027end

This project will collect measurements of the trace gases, aerosol particles and clouds present in the atmosphere over Eureka, Nunavut (80N, 86W) in 2025-2027 using instruments based at the Polar Environment Atmospheric Research Laboratory (PEARL). The campaign period will primarily focus on spring deployments each year. The measurements collected over these campaigns will be used to verify and assess the accuracy of two Canadian satellite missions that are monitoring Earth's atmosphere: the Atmospheric Chemistry Experiment (ACE) on SCISAT and the Optical Spectrograph and InfraRed Imager Syste

The CALASET-II project aims to design, build and test innovative instruments to measure concentrations of atmospheric trace gases as function of height. These new instruments will allow identification and quantification of specific gases, such as carbon dioxide, and help verify measurements obtained from the satellites that observe Earth's atmosphere.

Visible and near-UV wide field imaging from the Stratosphere$400Kvalue2018start2023end

The objective of this project is to design, build and make the first engineering flight of the GigaBIT telescope, a diffraction-limited 1.3 m visible/near-UV wide field imaging telescope. This project also aims to fly and analyze data from GigaBIT's predecessor, the SuperBIT balloon borne telescope. These telescopes, by providing large images of distant galaxies, will help to probe the distribution of dark matter through distortions in space caused by gravity. It will advance the technology of optical and near-UV telescopes and pointing systems, and advance our understanding of cluster physics

CALASET-NG - Advancing a payload for atmospheric infrared laser absorption spectroscopy$300Kvalue2020start2025end

Reliable climate data is crucial for Canadians to understand how our climate is changing. The Canadian Atmospheric Laser Absorption Spectroscopy Experiment Test-bed (CALASET) aims to build a suite of instruments to verify measurements from Earth-observing satellites. It is important to ensure that these space-based instruments are performing well to produce critical climate data. The CALASET-Next Generation (CALASET-NG) project furthers this development with two main objectives: 1) develop new technologies for measuring gases in the atmosphere and provide a validation and verification capabil

A Superpressure Balloon flight of the SuperBIT Telescope$300Kvalue2020start2025end

Stratospheric balloon telescopes, operating above 99.5% of the Earth's atmosphere, avoid atmospheric distortions present in terrestrial ground based telescopes, thus improving the observation of stars. The project goal is to repair and upgrade the Superpressure Balloon-borne Imaging Telescope (SuperBIT) telescope to improve, in particular, star camera performance and automatic telescope focus/alignment. The SuperBIT telescope will provide large images of distant galaxies with detail comparable to NASA's Hubble Space Telescope. This project will pave the way for future telescopes with even gre

Analysis of Cosmic Microwave Background Polarization Data from the Second Flight of the SPIDER Balloon-borne Telescope$200Kvalue2019start2025end

Exploring the nature of the universe at its earliest times is one of the most exciting scientific goals in cosmology today. SPIDER is a polarimeter designed to test our most fundamental theories of the beginning of the universe by measuring or constraining the amplitude of primordial gravitational waves. SPIDER is a set of six telescopes that observe the oldest light we can see, the Cosmic Microwave Background radiation. The second stratospheric balloon flight of SPIDER will take place as part of this project, to observe the Cosmic Microwave Background polarization at three wavelengths. It wi

Enhancing Canada's Role in Satellite Validation of Carbon Dioxide, Carbon Monoxide, and Methane$100Kvalue2020start2025end

Validation is crucial to the success of every satellite mission. Without validation, the ability to interpret satellite measurements for scientific studies is significantly hampered or, in some cases, rendered impossible. This is especially true for satellite missions that focus on questions of the carbon cycle. The project's objectives are to improve atmospheric trace gas retrievals from a ground-based remote sensing observatory, and to perform scientific investigations of Canadian urban greenhouse gas emissions. By combining space-based and ground-based remote sensing measurements of greenh

Determining the mechanism of bone loss in space$100.0Kvalue2020start2023end

Studies on spaceflights lasting more than one year have shown that, due to weightlessness, astronauts on long missions may lose as much as twenty percent of their bone mass, which leads to a significant increase in risk of fracture and other complications. Following the previous work and discovery in bone-resorbing osteoclasts and in optimizing bone cell culture in simulated microgravity, the present project aims to determine the molecular mechanism behind bone loss in astronauts. The main objectives include the grow of osteoclasts on bone surfaces in simulated microgravity, comparison of the

Support of the GeoCarb mission through validation and modeling$75.0Kvalue2022start2027end

This project will support the Geostationary Carbon Cycle Observatory (GeoCarb), a joint NASA-The University of Oklahoma collaboration. GeoCarb will provide daily mapping of carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), carbon monoxide (CO), and solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) over the Americas. This mapping capability is truly unprecedented and therefore requires improved satellite validation methods and modeling. This project will provide support to GeoCarb for satellite validation and modernize the atmospheric models needed to respond to and prepare for these new and exciting challenges.
