To encourage scientific research and related scientific activities (e.g. data collection, integration, monitoring, and communication, including communication via conferences and symposia) and dissemination of scientific knowledge in the areas of: (a) Fisheries and Aquaculture Science; (b) Ecosystem Science; (c) Oceanography and Modelling; and (d) Freshwater Science.
The proposed research project must address at least one of the following research objectives: Heat, Forests, Carbon cycle.
The properties of quantum materials (QMs) are determined by strong correlations between their degrees of freedom, such as charge, spins and phonons. To fully capture the rich physics of QM, a dynamical approach is needed to unravel how electronic correlations form and are disrupted, and how the various degrees of freedom interact to exchange energy and momentum. The goal of the Project is to develop a quantum sensing platform for dynamic probing of correlated phases in QMs. Using ultrafast techniques, this platform will provide sensitivity to all aspects of the dynamics in these materials. The Canada Research Chairs Program (CRCP) aims to enable Canadian universities to foster research excellence and to enhance their role in the global, knowledge-based economy as world-class centres of research excellence; to provide targeted resources to help attract and retain a cadre of world class researchers to reinforce academic research excellence in Canadian universities; and to support internationally competitive research and research capacity that generates social, economic and cultural benefits for Canada.
The use of natural ecosystems, such as coastal marshes, in coastal protection systems has been widely recognized as a potential sustainable and resilient alternative to “grey” coastal structures. However, the widespread implementation of these measures has been limited due to a lack of data regarding their viability. This project aims to address those limitations by performing a series of physical modelling experiments examining the dynamics of a representative Canadian marsh – and how the dynamics contribute to the attenuation of flooding and stabilisation of the coast. The experiments will b

The CISE program builds on the successful CWSE program, continuing to promote the participation and retention of women in science and engineering, while expanding to further address issues faced by a broader range of underrepresented groups. It is being launched as a two-year pilot to replace the outgoing CWSE Chair in the Atlantic region with a team of three CISE Chairs at multiple universities across this region.

Precision agriculture is the combination of sensing and applying water and nutrients at the "right" time to promote optimal plant growth in a sustainable and cost-effective manner. Currently, there is a need for new technologies that allow for rapid, on-site analysis of soil and crop quality. This project aims to develop the combined use of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) and infrared (IR) spectroscopy for rapid chemical analysis of soil and nutrients in soil, plant parts (roots, leaves, seeds, etc.), and in the environment. Emphasis will be placed on measuring the supply of specif
The Project will include the development of novel quantum imaging technologies (both experimental and computational) to study fundamental aspects of coherent electronic dynamics in molecules. The Project will make use of a revolution in ultrafast laser technology – Ultrafast X-ray Photonics – combined with computational quantum dynamics to permit the direct observation and characterization of quantum electronic dynamics. Canada is a world leader in Ultrafast X-ray Photonics and the CFI has invested nearly $25M in ultrafast X-ray science infrastructure at the INRS-Varennes and the University of

Environmental Barrier Coatings (EBCs) are a key technology for the protection of ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) from the corrosion effects of water vapour at high temperatures. The use of ceramic-based turbine materials provides higher fuel efficiency, cost and fuel savings, and lower environmental impact. This Project seeks to decrease the porosity of thermal sprayed EBCs by application of a sealant material, so that the coatings become impermeable to water vapour. Sealant powders will be prepared and applied to the coating using slurry methods or by applying the chemical precursors directl
This project will use ground measurements to validate the data products from the SMAP satellite by supporting a ground network in Northern Quebec; testing and validating the SMAP data product to monitor the soil Freeze/Thaw state at medium and high resolution over the tundra and the boreal forest in Canada and; develop a hydrothermal model to provide soil moisture and Freeze/Thaw information in high spatial and temporal resolution at a watershed level.

Monitoring dam structures under climate change conditions is essential in terms of assessing their safety, adapting their operations, and ensuring their long-term viability in the face of changing environmental factors. Such monitoring helps mitigate risks, protect downstream communities and maintain critical water storage and management infrastructure. Canada, with its numerous dams, faces unique challenges like harsh climates and rugged terrain, making innovative monitoring techniques essential. Traditional monitoring methods of dams and their infrastructures have limitations, but Interferom
