Construct a Cultural Workspace within its planned multifunction, energy efficient building. The proposed workshop space will offer culturally-anchored services and resources not otherwise available in the community, which encourage and strengthen local peoples’ economic and educational pursuit of traditional practices and ways of life.
Hilap Aulaaniit Qanuq Atayut (The World and its Connections) is an Inuit-driven approach to environmental knowledge production that combines the resources, expertise, and passion of four Inuinnaqtun speaking communities—Cambridge Bay, Kugluktuk, Gjoa Haven and Uluhaktok—to build and apply an environmental lexicon for the Inuinnaqtun language. This project will coalesce Inuinnaqtun’s remaining linguistic experts to document detailed Inuinnait knowledge of the natural world, while addressing the reality that Inuinnaqtun—the foundation of Inuinnait culture—has fewer than 600 fluent speakers remai

Tagging Inuit Knowledge seeks to facilitate Inuit knowledge sharing about a vast collection of digitized media owned by Pitquhirnikkut Ilihautiniq / Kitikmeot Heritage Society (PI/KHS) through its digital content portal called the Inuit Knowledge Bank. The Knowledge Bank is a custom developed content management and mobilization platform designed to facilitate Inuit access to, and engagement with, their digital heritage. This project will develop and implement digital tagging functionality that will allow Inuit users to contribute metadata to existing document records to assist with their id
Our project will see the development of a new cloud based storage solution for roughly 8 TB of cultural records to address risks of aging servers, insecure data warehousing, data security gaps, and PI/KHS not benefiting from emerging technology. Working with Ampere (formerly known as Pinnguaq Association), the team will review the current data scope, and technology options; develop project workflows, design elements, and user Experience; execute the migration of data and the Web Application, with demonstrations & testing; and create easy-use portals for content upload and curation.
The Pitquhirnikkut Ilihautiniq/Kitikmeot Heritage Society will digitize 1,000 35-mm slides that capture unseen moments in the lives of people, past and present, in the Central Canadian Arctic. The Laserich Collection offers insight into life in remote Inuit communities. These images span decades and capture everyday lives, people and places. No other collection offers this volume of information and such a broad context of life in the North. It will enhance Canadian understanding of northern communities and help them to preserve and share their documentary heritage. The organization will shar

This project focuses on the needs of Inuinnait—a distinct regional group of Inuit living in the Central Canadian Arctic. The Pitquhirnikkut Ilihautiniq/Kitikmeot Heritage Society will record Inuinnait oral documentary heritage from a diminishing group of knowledge holders. The Society recognizes that the tangible memories and the knowledge, values, beliefs, and practices held by these Elders is the foundation of the Inuinnait culture. This unique knowledge will soon be gone, and with it, a significant proportion of Inuinnait culture and heritage will disappear entirely. This project will docum
