The objective of this project is to increase oilseed processing efficiency and recover higher volumes of oil during the extraction process by evaluating new crush technologies, the use of solvent extraction technologies and the opportunity to develop a co-product soil amendment for mushroom production.
The proposed project will determine suitability of by-product Ahiflower press cake and/or micronized seed as a beneficial feed amendment for egg layer hens, examining eggshell strength, egg yolk composition, and culinary egg parameters. The project will also introduce this novel feedstock material to CFIA as a research material for possible future novel feed materials approval. This upcycled material has exceptionally high calcium and silica content and an excellent overall balance of omega-3-6-9 fatty acids. Project success could improve sustainability, resilience, and competitiveness for Can
The firm will conduct a controlled animal feeding trial to compare Ahiflower oil, a plant-based omega dietary oil, to fish and flaxseed oils using a novel carbon-isotope ratio method to discern brain DHA flux rates.
UK Eureka E!13289 UK consortium (TasteHead, Sumach) and Natures Crops International Ltd will develop processing and handling technology for oilseeds to access new markets.
