To develop, improve and implement a suite of technological tool that will empower and enable forest managers and practitioners to conduct the best climate-smart silviculture to sustain northern mixed and hardwood stands in eastern Canada and elsewhere.
To establish the basis and to introduce a framework for stakeholders in the New Brunswick forest products sector to engage into the digital transformation of the value chain.
This project is centred around the establishment of 100 one-hectare experimental units (cells) in the field. In each cell, detailed measurements will be taken on sample trees that will be followed all the way through harvesting and bucking into products. The sample-tree data will be complemented with super high-density point clouds (>2000/m2), enhanced forest inventories (EFI), remote sensing data (multispectral satellite imagery), harvester on-board computer (OBC) data and other information.
The organization will publish an evidence-based roadmap for AI-enabled biomass harvesting—combining data analysis, field time-studies, and predictive modeling—delivered as a white paper and an SME case study.
NHRI will be building a Tactical Silviculture Planner that will automatically assign a high-level silvicultural regimes to stands using enhanced forest inventory (EFI) variables and prepare an optimized tactical plan based on critical silvicultural requirements.
The NHRI will work with SMEs from the forest products sector and others implement sound forest management practices through the adoption of new technology, NHRI tools and processes. It will also help implement a culture of continuous improvement.
