1) Inshore exploratory fisheries near Grise Fiord; 2) Offshore Ocean Tracking Network acoustic monitoring; 3) Optimization of turbot potting technology, and; 4) The offshore exploratory porcupine crab fishery.
Implement a series of COVID-19-related measures in order to maintain as many fishery-sector jobs amongst its four 100% Inuit-owned member companies. NFA will provide PPE, cover the cost of protocol development and risk analysis, reimburse plant/vessel modifications to ensure social distancing barriers and other related risk-reductions and port landing surcharges and cover other additional travel-related costs incurred as a direct result of the COVID-19 restrictions in Canada and Greenland. NFA will also address the marketing and branding needs for the Nunavut P. montagui shrimp species in actu
Conduct targeted scientific research to support Nunavut's fisheries sector. The project will cover a number of strategic gaps in knowledge for the fisheries sector to sustainably expand the fisheries or improve current practices as well as routine research requirements to maintain the existing fisheries. The project will monitor current fisheries stock to ensure sustainability, test new technologies to determine the viability of adding species to Nunavut's commercial fisheries (both inshore and offshore), and test and research different practices to reduce the environmental impact of the fishe
The Nunavut Fisheries Association (NFA) will run a 3-year project researching, identifying and evaluating new opportunities for Northern Canadian seafood exports.
Contracting a vessel to collect fish tracking data near Pond Inlet, Clyde River and Qikiqtarjuaq to support the Arctic Ocean Tracking Network (OTN) program.
Nunavut Fisheries Association (NFA) will run a two year project compiling research and data to be analyzed for the better management and practices when it comes to shrimping in Nunavut waters.
Project to develop more eco-friendly fishing systems that are capable of reducing seabed impact without compromising economically sustainable catch levels. This research will be a collaboration between academia and industry and will involve a systematic approach to problem solving. The resulting output will be the development of new innovative fishing systems that are low-impact, fishery-specific, and industry relevant.
Project to focus on the development of a new potential commercial species for the Nunavut fishery, the Porcupine crab. Work will identify processing technologies for meat or section production and will track crab movement to determine seasonal distribution patterns in aid of harvesting strategies.
To encourage scientific research and related scientific activities and dissemination of scientific knowledge in the areas of: fisheries and auqculture science; ecosystem science; oceanography and modelling; hydrographic science; and freshwater science.
