This project aims to design and develop an on-farm unit for pig euthanasia by electrocution that will be used during depopulations ordered by the CFIA following a health crisis, for herds under movement restriction and to rapidly cull livestock in the event that the Canadian borders are closed to exports. In addition, evaluate, identify and acquire equipment to support complementary methods of mass euthanasia, with the aim of better preparing the Quebec pig sector to face a health crisis.
The project aims to validate the equipment and electrical parameters required to automate the electrocution of pigs in EQSP's mobile euthanasia unit (MEU).
This project aims to improve the preparedness of partners in the Quebec pork sector for the orderly management of surplus pigs following the closure of borders to exports of pork products due to an outbreak of African swine fever in Quebec or Canada. This preparation includes the development of tools on the use of striker guns for pig depopulation, and an information event for breeders and stakeholders in the Quebec pork industry.
