Optimization of component robustness using AI-based digital twin of silicon photonic component fabrication$667Kvalue2023start2026end

This project exploits machine learning algorithms in the design of the next generation photonic circuits with enhanced performance. Taking the approach further, machine learning is also exploited in creating a digital twin of silicon photonic fabrication, so that fabrication induced variations can be accurately captured and pre-emptively corrected. Photonic integrated circuits render optical system ideas more practical with increased performance along with reduced size and cost. Silicon photonics, in particular, exploiting the ubiquitous microelectronic miniaturization infrastructure, en

Innovative Ultra-high-performance Concrete Based Solutions for Upgrading Aging Infrastructures$583Kvalue2026start2029end

Canada’s infrastructure is deteriorating and vulnerable to disasters. About 12.4% of Canadian Bridges (9,661 Bridges or Tunnels) are in poor/very poor condition, which require immediate rehabilitation or replacement. Ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) is an advanced class of concrete materials that show superior mechanical and durability performance. UHPC is an ideal material for prefabrication since it can reduce the self-weight of conventional concrete structures by over 50%, effectively making it easier to transport and assemble the prefabricated members. However, UHPC application is h

Advancing Deep Space Propulsion Technology Using High-Altitude Balloon Platforms$394Kvalue2024start2027end

This project will use high-altitude ballooning to develop technology that will find application in deep space propulsion within the solar system and beyond. The propulsion concept uses a free source of energy: the solar wind. While the solar wind is tenuous, it can be interacted with using magnetic fields to transfer thrust to a spacecraft. This proposal will develop the key hardware components required to demonstrate the Plasma Magnet: devices capable of deploying and controlling large loops of superconducting cable measuring meters in diameter from a small, CubeSat-sized spacecraft.

Techno-eco-environmental optimization of pea-protein processing and starch$331Kvalue2021start2024end

The development of sustainability assessment based on techno-economic analysis (TEA) and life cycle analysis (LCA) of pulse-based protein processing techniques has not been well established in Canada. Most of the available data for LCA/TEA practitioners currently use US and European data inventories, when available, in proxy for Canadian data to complete sustainability assessments. Given the sensitivity of assessment results to data inputs, it is essential to capture local/regional data input and make them available in an organized database to support rigorous and meaningful LCA/TEA output. AI accelerated mapping and design of CO2-recycling via electrocatalysis at the atomic scale$327Kvalue2021start2024end

The Project seeks to advance CO2-recycling via electrocatalysis using AI-driven mapping and engineering of key reaction centres at the atomic scale. Copper is the most effective CO2-to-fuel electrocatalyst. However, no systematic approach has yet been developed to engineer its governing reaction mechanisms. To address this gap, the Project team will employ AI to accelerate the design of chemically active sites and interfacial solvation structures on copper during CO2 conversion. The ultimate aim is to utilize Artificial Intelligence (AI) driven data acquisition and design inferences to acceler

Digital technologies have ushered in the current digital culture. There is widespread use of smartphones/tablets and the internet to interact with digitized artifacts, enabling more collective and networked forms of culture. Cisco forecasts global IP traffic to surpass 4.8 ZB (of which wireless and mobile traffic will account for > 70%) and the number of devices connected to IP networks to exceed 3 times the global population by 2022. The global IT infrastructure must expand to support this growth and demand in data traffic. Solutions for ultra-high capacity optical interconnections—from long-
