Antarctica and the hibernating brain; The interaction between mental fatigue, hypoxia, exercise and sleep in an isolated, confined and extreme (ICE) environment$150Kvalue2025start2028end

Extended exposure to the isolated and extreme conditions at the Concordia station may induce mental fatigue, a state associated with mood disturbances, safety concerns, and work errors. The BREEZE-project aims to comprehensively evaluate mental fatigue, sleep, and physical fitness during an Antarctic overwintering campaign by tracking psychological, (neuro)physiological, and behavioral parameters. Assessments will include questionnaires on fatigue, sleepiness, coping strategies, and mood, as well as polysomnography, exercise heart rate, genotype analysis, arterial oxygen saturation, actigraphy

Putting it all Together. Dynamics and Chemistry Probed Through Transmission Spectroscopy of a Cloud-Free Exoplanet$87.1Kvalue2024start2027end

Following the JWST ERS and Cycle 2 GO Announcement of Opportunity published on July 6, 2023, the CSA is providing funding via a Grant Agreement to the university to conduct their research using the JWST data. This program will analyze the observation of one transit of the cloud-free hot-Jupiter WASP-96b with NIRSpec/G395H to determine its atmosphere composition, and the effects of dynamics-induced chemistry. Because WASP-96b is cloudless, it is a prime target to study these effects. It has long been recognized that the atmosphere composition of hot-Jupiters can inform us about their formatio

Around the world in less than two days: observing the spectral phase curve of an ultra-hot Jupiter with JWST/NIRSpec$86.0Kvalue2025start2027end

Using the NIRSpec instrument on the JWST, this project will be monitoring the ultra-hot Jupiter WASP-76b as it completes a full orbit around its host star to paint an accurate picture of the atmosphere's chemical composition. Ultra-hot Jupiters like WASP-76b feature extreme temperature differences between their permanent day and night sides, which makes the interpretation of observations more complicated. To address this, the planet's full 3D temperature structure and cloud cover will be measured. This will provide a detailed understanding of WASP-76b's atmospheric chemistry and its formation

Mapping the Dust and Multiphase Gas in the Perseus Cluster of Galaxies$60.0Kvalue2026start2028end

This project uses JWST/NIRCam and NIRSpec to map dust and warm (1000 – 4000 K) gas in the Perseus cluster – the archetype for radio-mode AGN feedback. By combining JWST data with extensive multiwavelength observations, the study will produce the first detailed dust map of a cluster core and reveal the origin of the multiphase gas shaped by black hole jets.

The dayside of the coolest ultra-hot Jupiter, KELT-20b, resolved with eclipse mapping$57.9Kvalue2026start2028end

This project will produce the most precise 3D temperature map of an exoplanet to date using JWST/NIRSpec eclipse mapping of the ultra-hot Jupiter KELT-20b. Sensitive to water and CO emission, the observations will probe horizontal and vertical temperature structure, revealing how stellar energy is redistributed and how molecular dissociation shapes the atmosphere. The results will also constrain the planet’s C/O and refractory-to-volatile ratios, which are key tracers of its formation and migration.

XRISM Guest Scientist (XGS) Program for the Perseus Cluster Performance Verification (PV) Target. Measuring gas motions using a multi-wavelength approach and novel machine learning tools$50.0Kvalue2023start2025end

One of the primary objectives of XRISM is to understand the gas motions of the Perseus cluster of galaxies and how these connect to the black hole feedback processes. We propose a collaboration that will bring a unique set of expertise and observations. We will build a recurrent inference machine (i.e. a type of neural network) that can successfully deconvolve the intrinsic X-ray spectrum of a source from the XRISM instrumental response function. Overall, this collaboration will significantly enhance the XRISM science case for Perseus, and more generally, galaxy clusters.

This project seeks to uncover the composition of the lowest density ultra-short period (USP) planet ever observed, TOI-561b. NIRSpec will be used to determine if this planet has at atmosphere at all, as well as determining the composition of that atmosphere. The MIRI Excess Around Degenerates Survey$39.1Kvalue2024start2026end

Following the JWST ERS and Cycle 2 GO Announcement of Opportunity published on July 6, 2023, the CSA is providing funding via a Grant Agreement to the university to conduct their research using the JWST data. This project will conduct a survey proposal of 249 white dwarf stars within 25 parsecs of the sun in order to constrain the flux distributions of a large number of white dwarfs in the mid-infrared. The goal is to detect infrared excesses from cool brown dwarfs, young Jupiters, optically thin dust disks from shredding exo-planetesimals, and cyclotron emission from magnetic white dwarfs.

Combining Emission and Transmission Spectroscopy to reveal Exo-Neptune Aerosols Chemistry and Formation$34.8Kvalue2026start2028end

This project aims to perform a full panchromatic characterization of the warm Neptune TOI-674 b (640 K) using JWST, observing both transmission (0.6 – 12 µm) and emission (3 – 5.2 µm) spectra. TOI-674 b is uniquely suited for this dual-geometry study, enabling constraints on aerosol properties, atmospheric chemistry, and thermal structure. The results will break cloud-metallicity degeneracies, probe CH4/CO chemistry, assess potential tidal heating, and reveal formation and migration pathways, establishing TOI-674 b as a benchmark for warm Neptune atmospheres.

The Cold Worlds Spectral Library$33.8Kvalue2026start2028end

This project will use JWST/NIRSpec and MIRI to obtain high-precision spectra of 14 cold (250 – 500 K) brown dwarfs, creating the first comprehensive “cold world spectral library”. Combined with archival data, it will establish benchmark atmospheric properties – tracing clouds, chemistry, mixing, and auroral processes. This will help guide interpretation of upcoming JWST detections of cold, directly imaged exoplanets and advance comparative planetology across planets and brown dwarfs.

A Deep Dive Spectroscopic Study of an Auroral Emitting World$33.8Kvalue2026start2028end

This project will use JWST/NIRSpec and MIRI/MRS to obtain the first spectroscopic study of an auroral-emitting extrasolar world – the cold brown dwarf WISEP J1935-1546. Building on prior methane emission detections, the observations will search for CH4, H3+ and NH3+ features and test whether the emissions arise from a thermal inversion or magnetic interactions. The results will link planetary, substellar and exoplanetary atmospheric processes, demonstrating JWST’s unique reach for such faint targets.

Optimizing the development of sgRNA array library: a PoC study$27.5Kvalue2022start2023end

The CRISPR/Cas system has revolutionized the analysis of gene function in mammalian cells. Cas enzymes cut DNA at a specific genomic site as targeted by a single guide RNA (sgRNA) complimentary to the desired modification site. This system was rapidly adopted by the functional genomics community to perform pooled screens because of its simplicity and efficiency. However, current pooled screen read-outs are limited to assays with strong selective pressure, but are ill-suited to measure phenotypic effects on the state and differentiation of targeted cells. As such, arrayed screens are superior
