The National Research Council (NRC) and the Natural Resource Canada (NRCan) aim to identify and promote cost-effective approaches for net-zero industrial processes that could include renewable energy integration, energy efficiency, electrification or other technologies that replace process heating requirements.
Development of a high-efficiency, iron-based thermochemical storage system to provide reliable, dispatchable, high-temperature industrial heat. This project will design, fabricate, integrate, and test a containerized pilot system that stores surplus renewable electricity in solid iron media and releases that energy as heat on demand.
Funding will support research and development to address National Defence’s Challenge: North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) Modernization Science & Technology (S&T) Contest. Defence Research and Development Canada (DRDC) and its defence and security partners seek to advance capabilities in five key areas: quantum technologies; autonomous systems; counter-uncrewed aerial systems (CUAS); Arctic mobility and navigation of military platforms; and energy solutions that are scalable, efficient, and sustainable for current and future Arctic operations. The initiative targets critical scie

The project consists of building and testing a single-tube reactor prototype capable of releasing fully-decarbonized high-temperature heat. This reactor, based on the controlled thermochemical oxidation and reduction of iron, operates in a similar way to a long-life battery, and allowing the storage and release of clean energy on demand. More specifically, the project will involve assembling the initial prototype from a complete design, followed with the calibration of this reactor against performance parameters and initial commercial use case assumptions.
The project supports the advancement of the Firm's technology to TRL 5. More specifically, this will involve the design, development, and testing of the firm’s first multi-tube reactor prototype. This project will provide critical data to validate the performance, reliability, and economic value of the system, crucial for de-risking technical and scientific challenges associated with scaling the Firm's technology net zero heat solution.
The Test Engineer will help de-risk the development of the firm’s pilot-scale long-duration energy storage system by operating and improving lab and pilot test rigs, developing and executing test plans, analyzing performance data, and supporting design refinements.
