Integrate machine learning into manufacturing processes and export to new markets
Develop a hybrid process, which combines gas nitriding or gas carburizing and laser cladding, with laser heat treatment or induction heat treatment, to manufacture surface coatings with enhanced wear-resistance in comparison with conventional methods in order to improve the longevity and performance of high-value components.
Germany 3+2 project AI-SLAM: Artificial Intelligence Enhancement of Process Sensing for Adaptive Laser Additive Manufacturing. The aim of AI-SLAM is to develop machine learning and advanced tool path planning algorithms combined with cutting edge process sensors to facilitate fully automated laser directed energy deposition thereby improving cost competitiveness.
“As part of the international consortium project “DECHRO - Development of a sustainable alternative to hard chrome planting through a combination of EHLA and simultaneous roller burnishing”, this project will focus on developing extreme high-speed laser application (EHLA) cladding technology integrated with roller burnishing for the repair of critical components. The work will emphasize maximizing metallurgical quality through elimination of defects, thereby resulting in a proven process for high-performance, safety-critical repairs for Canadian industries.
Applying an engineering approach to 3D printing complex features onto high value added metallic components using existing industrial laser cladding equipment.
