Ardra Inc. is advancing groundbreaking animal-free porphyrin ingredients created through precision fermentation. This project will scale up production of animal-free porphyrins and optimize their formulation to deliver a sustainable, nutrient-rich, and flavourful alternative to animal-derived ingredients. By improving production efficiency and validating product safety and performance, Ardra aims to accelerate the path to market for animal-free porphyrins. The result will support the growing demand for plant-based foods while helping reduce the environmental footprint of the global food indust
Commercialize platform to develop fermentation based processes to produce natural flavours
The project is focused on producing a large sample of natural ingredient leaf-aldehyde that is used in the food industry as a flavour ingredient, and also has the potential to be used as a natural preservative. The development will focus on optimization and scale-up trial of a fermentation process that Ardra has developed to pilot-scale.

Through a series of bench-scale fermenter experiments with a new designer strain, the proposed fermentation optimization for leaf-aldehyde production based on our validated process will focus on reducing production cost. The support from NRC-IRAP for this project will help us lower the technical risk for large-scale (1,000 - 10,000L) process, unlock next milestone payment from a strategic investment from an industry partner, establish clear pathway to product commercialization, and boost Canadian bio-economy by developing HQPs and research partnership within Ardra and Verschuren Centre in Nov

The project will support development of intellectual property capacity within the firm.
This project focuses on producing a natural flavour ingredient called leaf-aldehyde using Ardra’s proprietary fermentation process. A pilot-scale 80 L fermenter will be used to produce 1 kg of leaf-aldehyde sample to fulfil customer requests for samples.
The funding provided by the IAP program is intended to assist innovative small and medium-sized enterprises in the start-up phase that cannot access existing commercial support related to COVID-19.
