Through this project, the Council of the Atikamekw Nation is proposing the implementation of new intervention programs designed to support the administration of extrajudicial measures and probation for Atikamekw youth. These programs, based on the principles of restorative justice, will be culturally appropriate, safe and include wilderness camps. Finally, the involvement of the family (family council), the elders (council of elders), other service providers and the victim will contribute to raising the youth's awareness about their offending behaviour.
The purpose of the project is to develop and implement an Atikamekw law on child and family services in accordance with the Act respecting First Nations, Inuit and Métis children, youth and families (S.C. 2019, c. 24).
This grant supports the participation of six employees of the recipient in the “Indigenous Justice System – A Knowledge Sharing Symposium”.
This departmental contribution is in support of costs associated with setting up a traditional tent site which will allow Elders and other partners to meet safely with clients of the Community-based Justice Program during and after the current Covid-19 context.
