Bubble Technology Industries (BTI) proposes to continue the advancement of its radiation detection systems, building upon its successful FlexSpec product line and extending the underlying technologies to other applications in homeland security and space. These enhancements will improve BTI’s competitive position and result in increased market share in both the US and overseas export markets.
The proposed project aims to develop and harden light readout technologies required for radiation spectrometers for exploration-class space missions to the Moon and beyond. Bubble Technology Industries (BTI) is currently developing radiation spectrometers for life science and planetary science purposes, using silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) to read out the light from scintillator detectors. In previous work, SiPMs have been demonstrated in the laboratory; however, hardening is required to optimize the technology for long deployments in deep space. In the proposed work, compact sensor packag
Active interrogation techniques using neutron beams are typically used for material identification and elemental analysis over a broad spectrum of space and terrestrial applications. Space applications include searching for volatiles, geological characterization, and (eventually) prospecting to enable mining and in-situ resource utilization; applications on Earth include explosives and narcotics detection in security arenas. BTI is proposing to develop a simple, miniature, ruggedized ion source as a component of future neutron generators and ion-beam probes. The miniaturized device will help a
Radiation prediction, monitoring, and protection technologies are an important part of reducing the risk to space crews. Building radiation detectors for human space missions, including the exploration of Mars, is challenging because of strict size, weight, and power limits. To solve these problems, this project will explore the use of radiation detectors that are much smaller than current technology. The detector materials to be evaluated can more accurately separate different types of radiation found in space. These miniaturized radiation detectors will be useful on all space missions, as

Radiation prediction, monitoring, and protection technologies are a key part of all space missions. The construction of radiation detectors for long-duration exploration missions presents particular challenges because of stringent size, weight and power requirements. The proposed work aims to assess silicon photomultipliers as an enabling technology for miniaturized radiation spectrometers. These silicon devices have the potential to replace traditional, bulky photomultiplier tubes, significantly reducing the size and power consumption of radiation-detection instrumentation with little or no
The project is to upgrade systems, software and information technology infrastructure, and develop and execute an international marketing campaign to increase domestic and international sales.
The purpose of this project is to provide support through the IRAP Youth Employment Program to support BTI’s research and development activities in the space and homeland security sectors. BTI aims to recruit and train a new graduate for the Systems Engineer/Designer role. This individual will support systems engineering tasks for upcoming space programs, where innovative payloads are being developed for space exploration missions. The individual may also support systems engineering tasks in homeland security programs aimed at detecting radioactive and explosive threats.
The purpose of this CanExport SMEs agreement is to support small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) for activities related to export market development that are part of an export business case for a specific target market, particularly where activities are targeting departmental priority markets and sectors.
Through the application of national and local priorities, the CSJ program seeks to provide youth, particularly those who face barriers to employment with access to work opportunities. Funded employers must demonstrate that they are providing quality work experiences for youth that provide opportunities to develop and improve their skills.
