This project aims to produce nutrient-rich biochar from agricultural, agri-food and food waste.
This project advances next generation pyrolytic carbonization reactor for deployment in a demonstration site at a municipal landfill. The project will validate the performance and commercial readiness of an innovative technology for converting biomass and organic waste into high value biocarbon and permanent carbon storage across agriculture, remediation, construction and green infrastructure.
The objective of this project is to chemically break down or “pyrolyze” food waste into constituent elements, primarily carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. The gaseous elements are removed from the reactor and can be used to produce sustainable energy. The carbon is left behind. This newly formed biocarbon is stable and can be used in a variety of value-added applications.
This project will advance the organic waste processing and carbonization technologies to a near-commercial technology readiness level. It will also demonstrate the carbon sequestration potential of integrating captured biocarbon into renewable agriculture, sustainable construction, and green infrastructure projects.
This project will focus on the development and manufacture of a technology for thermally treating waste biomass to reduce future methane emissions. The technology will be field tested at two pilot sites in partnership with Manitoba municipalities.
The objective of this project is to convert food waste into a stable form of biocarbon that (1) sequesters atmospheric CO2, (2) prevents future landfill methane emissions, and (3) supports sustainable agriculture.
This project will focus on designing and modelling a prototype technology in a CAD environment. The successful engineering candidate will have skills in mechanical systems, heat transfer, material handling, biomass energy production, sensors and controls, and programmable logic controllers. The expected outcome of this project will be a validated model of a biomass-to-bioenergy/biocarbon system that can then proceed to the construction, assembly, commissioning and testing stages.
This project will explore the production of biocarbon from organic waste inputs and the carbon sequestration potential of incorporating biocarbon into agriculture, sustainable construction, green infrastructure and other goods and processes. The Youth will gain experience in researching the production of biocarbon from organic waste inputs, the sequestration of biocarbon in stable places and products, the pre-processing of organic waste inputs (size reduction, moisture reduction), the carbonization of organic waste inputs through pyrolytic reaction, and the management, data collection and repo
This project supports the hiring of a Laboratory Research Analyst to advance research on biocarbon. The work will focus on developing and applying characterization methods for biomass and biochar, supporting in-house and external projects for biochar applications in agricultural soils, construction materials, green infrastructure, and environmental remediation. The role also assists with certification processes and ensures safety in lab operations.
The project will support development of intellectual property capacity within the firm.
