Develop and build equipment to produce biodegradable coated fertilizer
Development and commercialization of fertilizer coating
The objective of this project is to develop a low-cost, environmentally friendly fertilizer and evaluate its effectiveness. The approach involves embedding urease and nitrification inhibitors directly into urea granules using a 100% dry process that eliminates the need for solvents or stabilizing agents.
Research will be conducted to confirm the biodegradability of a polymer film for use in agricultural coatings. Biodegradability will be assessed under standard conditions. Work will be conducted to ensure biodegradability does not impact requirements for controlled release of fertilizers in controlled settings. Research will determine if fertilizer coated with the biodegradable coating will support adequate plant growth as well as currently available fertilizers coated with non biodegradable coatings. Research will ensure the coating does not negatively impact plant growth.
