This project is mostly related to technology research and development.
Ekona has built and tested a 200 kg-H2/day methane pyrolysis system at its Burnaby-based pilot facility. This proposed project will expand the site with a next-generation reactor for higher efficiency, increased capacity to 500 kg-H2/day, and upgraded carbon handling and gas cleanup systems to enable continuous production of clean hydrogen and carbon black. This project will advance firm’s methane pyrolysis technology from TRL 5 to TRL7 and develop a pilot plant, forming the design basis for Ekona’s early commercial field demonstration.
This project is mostly related to technology research and development.
The project is mostly related to conducting a front-end engineering and design (FEED) study to focus on the technical requirements as well as financial and regulatory aspects and permitting requirements to execute a demonstration project.
Modelling, Designing and Prototype Testing of a Proof-of-Concept Steady-State, Steady-Flow Methane Pyrolysis Reactor.
Ekona Power will build a small scale prototype pyrolysis reactor, test fixture and subsequent brass-board system to demonstrate its proprietary Pulsed Methane Pyrolysis (PMP) technology for the production of low carbon intensity H2 and solid carbon from natural gas. PMP derived H2 will have GHG emissions that are reduced by up to 90% when compared to SMR derived H2. The NRC will collaborate in designing, building and testing the prototype reactor and brass-board system. The NRC will also develop ways to condition the carbon to add value to this stream. The outcome of the project will be a func

Design, develop and test a proof-of-concept Tri-Generation Pyrolysis (TGP) Platform for Green Hydrogen Production.
Conduct the technical feasibility study of application of carbon produced as a by-product of firm’s proprietary methane pyrolysis process, and its improved modifications for production of concrete pavers.
Ekona and its contractors will develop a Preliminary Design for the Tri-Generation Pyrolysis (TGP) process for low-cost, green, industrial hydrogen production. Modeling and analysis will support the Preliminary Design, as required, to sufficiently de-risk the TGP concept prior to advancing to the next stage of prototype development in 2019-2020.
The funding provided from the IAP program is to assist innovative, early-stage small- and medium-sized enterprises that are unable to access existing COVID-19 business support.
As part of the Japan Corporate Co-Innovation Program, the project “EkonaTOHO” will focus on defining Japanese Partner's facility integration requirements, establishing the execution framework for future demonstration activities, as well as a techno-economic feasibility study of the firm's technology for decarbonized heat and power applications in Japan.
Conduct analysis of the current clean hydrogen and carbon markets. Update the techno-economic analysis for the firm’s Pulsed-Methane Pyrolysis (PMP) solution for clean hydrogen production.
Conduct a competitive analysis of patent landscape in the field of methane pyrolysis and develop an IP strategy and an execution plan for protecting its pulsed methane pyrolysis (PMP) platform.
Provides a recent graduate engineer with career development opportunity in the role of Mechanical Engineer to support the design, building, assembly and testing of the firm's prototype Pulsed Methane Pyrolysis (PMP) reactor for clean hydrogen production.
