This project is mostly related to technology research and development.
Innovative Fuel Systems will leverage their commercialized natural gas dual fuel system for heavy-duty engines to develop a hydrogen-diesel dual fuel system that will be applicable to 90% of the heavy-duty engines on the road today. The hydrogen-dual fuel engines will reduce diesel consumption and CO2e emissions. A consortium of fleet operators will conduct field verification of the engines developed as part of this project.

The key project outcomes will be: #1. The advancement of the IFS DF system hardware design and software to the point of it being to handle most of the HC/Methane emissions in-cylinder for substitution rates of up to 55%. #2. For substitution rates above 55%, the development of the first commercially available low temperature advanced methane catalyst (Hardware and Software) for Class 8 HD trucks. This development will allow for Dual-Fuel technology to be incorporated into Class 7 and 8 trucks on a factory OEM level instead of just as a after market upgrade or after the end of useful life as it
This project will try to determine the various blend ratios of hydrogen and natural gas that can be utilized in a diesel fuel blend in a heavy-duty truck, while ensuring operability.
In the process of developing our next generation Advanced Dual-Fuel System we have designed a proprietary ECU which allows for the seamless operation of a Dual-Fuel system with post EPA14'-17' Heavy-Duty engines for class 8 trucks. This work has generated new IP for the company that the company is seeking to protect via patents.
