This project entitled « HiCIBaS - High-Contrast Imaging Balloon System » aims to develop and test a promising new type of Low-Order Wave Front Sensor (LOWFS) to study and characterize its performance at 40 km and the typical PSF instabilities and anomalies encountered in near space in the visible. The stratospheric balloon is a perfect platform to test advanced technologies on a space-like environment before their use for space applications. This test bed will allow further expansion into a more complete high contrast imaging observatory to be flown for dedicated exoplanet candidate observatio
This project aims to use remote sensing and field-based observations to elucidate expected trajectories of landscape change and its impacts in order to reduce uncertainty and support forward-looking adaptation for Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation (VGFN) members. Traditional knowledge will be used to identify key aspects of the landscape linked to local land use (e.g., vegetation covers that facilitate or hinder travel), which will become focal points for the scientific and communication components of the project. Information will be synthesised, and specialised communication products will be devel
Study the migratory ecology of the searun (anadromous) Arctic char of the Cambridge Bay region. The study will address key challenges in the management of and important fishery, provide information on critical freshwater and marine habitats, and establish a basis for understanding the physiological constraints that will be most important in predicting the response of the species to a changing Arctic.
Provide open access publication of the baseline data generated by the long-term ecological monitoring program of the Bylot Island field station; Evaluate how innovative technologies could enhance Arctic biodiversity monitoring programs; Develop new partnerships between researchers and the Pond Inlet community to promote community-driven biodiversity initiatives; Export the know-how developed at the Bylot Island field station on the monitoring of Arctic terrestrial biodiversity.
The SWOT satellite mission will provide water level information for millions of lakes, rivers and wetlands in Canada. This project proposes to exploit this information to improve our understanding of the influence of these environments on the Earth system and to improve the quality of the hydrological forecast issued by the Canadian surface and river forecasting system. The project also aims to take advantage of in situ and multi-mission satellite observations to calibrate and validate SWOT products and assess their accuracy under various environmental conditions.
Mobile health technologies, such as portable equipment and captors, are known to follow way of life medicine in order to optimize the health and autonomy of the population. However, the connection between mobile health technology data and electronic health files remain difficult in remote area primary care. The objective of the project is to evaluate the feasibility of implementing an intelligent, integrating and interoperable surveillance device linked to a numerical health ecosystem in remote area and space exploration primary care.
This project will develop a new framework for urban planning and public investment by examining, documenting and comparing methods, ideas, designs and programs that unite people across jurisdictional boundaries. Practical solutions for the next generation of urban policymakers will be developed using four important Canadian and European cities: Quebec City, Vancouver, Barcelona and Dublin as the setting for MegaRegion studies. A Specialization or Certificate in Canadian-European urban studies known as the International Track will be created.
Students will receive training which utilizes emerging sustainable science and engineering principles and technical tools. They will follow technically rich international curricula in a transatlantic exchange experience, and address environmental issues associated with water, air and soil pollution. The project will assist students in becoming technically and socially skilled when studying and monitoring environmental problems worldwide, and will also develop interactive communication tools to support long distance learning.
Funding will support research and development to identify solutions to National Defence’s Moral Trauma on the Frontline – See, Prevent and Treat Challenge. Defence Research and Development Canada (DRDC) in collaboration with Canada’s defence, security and public safety communities are looking for state-of-the-art research on “moral injury” and cutting edge prevention models and treatment strategies, in support of DND/CAF personnel, healthcare workers and First Responders at the front lines of the current pandemic, in order to provide for the long-term mental health of these populations.
To encourage scientific research and related scientific activities (e.g. data collection, integration, monitoring, and communication, including communication via conferences and symposia) and dissemination of scientific knowledge in the areas of: (a) Fisheries and Aquaculture Science; (b) Ecosystem Science; (c) Oceanography and Modelling; and (d) Freshwater Science.
The funding received will be distributed to eligible students to help offset the high costs of conducting research in the north.
