This project develops a commercial capacity to monitor freshwater lake ice hazards from space using satellite radar and distribution of ice hazard maps to user’s cell phones and desktop computers in near real-time. NextGen Environmental Research will also build a capacity for rapid classification of radar data into ice types and hazards using Deep Learning algorithms. The lake ice hazard monitoring service will process large volumes of radar image data to help make recreational and remote communities that rely on lake ice to travel more safely and be more climate resilient in the future.
This project aims to develop an SEO platform to monitor the Prairies with precision annually to track the effects of climate change that may result in further losses to habitat biodiversity.
Detection and Monitoring of Linear Hazards to Travel on Lake Ice A study is proposed to investigate linear lake ice hazards during the spring melt period using multi-sensor remote sensing data and ice validation using C-band data. After melt onset, the hazards to late season lake ice travel form first along pressure ridges, leads, and cracks where the mechanical strength of the ice sheet is compromised. The horizontal ice sheet containing linear deformations will be imaged as a time series in the south basin of Lake Winnipeg using spatially complete microwave, optical, thermal, and elevation
Near real-time information is needed by communities and rural municipalities that are affected by flooding in order to be more climate resilient. The purpose of this project is to develop a technical platform and an automated means to classify land and water from satellite data to show the flood extent in agriculture, wooded, and built up environments and provide this to users using internet technology.
This project has a strategic focus on promoting the growth of the firm by conducting experiments to expand its user base. These experiments will enable the firm to gather valuable insights, and adapt its strategies to meet the evolving demands of the market. The ultimate objective is for the firm to drive sustainable growth and establish a more responsive, cost-effective, and agile framework in line with market dynamics.
NGE aims to advance the use of satellite radar and ML to generate new insights into northern transportation conditions
NextGen Environmental Inc. is developing satellite technologies that will help make lake ice travel safer. These technologies will enable communities and recreational users in Canada to adapt to our changing climate and become more climate resilient. This technology will address a long-standing winter travel problem by decreasing risk and the loss of personal property, injury, and death of Canadians in remote and developed areas. This solution will save lives and reduce the costs associated with decisions made due to poor situational awareness.
NextGen Environmental Research Inc. operates at the downstream end of the satellite and low altitude aerial imagery segment and provides value-added products in environmental applications. The corporation is currently developing a prototype platform for accessing, adding value, and publishing image products to downstream consumers. This position plays a support role to the development and operation of the platform and is responsible for image manipulation, and implementation of Deep Learning image processing methods.
The project builds a live competition leaderboard software that runs on the internet. This software application enables anglers, while on the water or ice, to automatically measure fish length using AI, enter competitions with other users, and have the results displayed in real-time to the competitors. Once the competition is complete the results are published to a live leaderboard that ranks users by their fish catches and is visible to the public.
