Extraction and Purification of Melanin from Black Soldier Fly (BSF) for Applications across the Cosmetic, Pharmaceutical, and Energy Storage Iindustries$48.5Kvalue2025start2026end

Melanin is a pigment polymer found in the skin, hair, and eyes, essential for coloration and protecting tissues from UV damage. Naturally synthesized in the human body and by many other organisms across several varieties of species (e.g. bacteria, fungi, mammals, etc); it can also be chemically synthesized or produced via microbial fermentation. Chemically synthesized melanin is considered an environmentally taxing and financially expensive process. The Black Soldier Fly (BSF) and its pupae is one such organism from which the naturally occurring melanin can be extracted. Oberland, in collabor

Feed Sourcing and Processing for Black Soldier Fly Larvae$39.8Kvalue2020start2021end

Oberland is enhancing it's efficiencies and life cycle monitoring to allow greater automation of the production flow while validating pre-consumer organic waste feed stocks and exploring experimental source separated organics feed stocks.

Process Optmiziation and Product Development$20.7Kvalue2023start2023end

Oberland is embarking on an R&D project to investigate the optimal feed stock composition and dryer settings to optimize protein content of its black soldier fly larvae. The results of those investigations, along with other investigative activities, will be used to develop a dog food supplement product.

Optimization of Black Soldier Fly Grow Parameters$20.6Kvalue2023start2024end

Oberland continues to investigate the optimal feedstock composition to optimize the nutritional content of its black soldier fly larvae. The results of those investigations, along with other investigative activities, will be used to develop a more nutritious feed with a longer shelf-life.

Proposed Economic and Environmental Impact of Sustainable Bait Designs for Use in Canada’s Atlantic Fisheries$20.6Kvalue2025start2026end

Oberland's black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) bait has the potential to be a sustainable, supply chain resilient, cost-competitive bait produced in Nova Scotia, for use by Atlantic Canada's lobster and crab harvesters. Following laboratory experiments with Homarus Labs in early 2025, Oberland Agriscience Inc. and Homarus seek to understand the in-ocean effects of and on our bait formulations. The proposed experiment objectives are (1) to determine the residence time of BSFL bait in real world applications; (2) to observe how lobster responds when presented with BSFL bait; (3) to observe the respo
