A simulation tool for the analysis of macro-scale performance with nano-scale structures, combining ray-tracing and finite-difference time-domain capabilities and verification with microLED devices and micro-lens array structures.
Germany 3+2 AIIR-Power consortium project with German and Canadian partners to develop Artificial intelligence (AI) techniques for the optimization of optoelectronic devices. An AI approach will be applied to design & manufacture elevated-voltage photonic power converters (PPC) operating at 1550 nm, enabling combined power & data long-distance transfer. Materials, fabrication and full devices will be characterized.
This project works towards delivering ground-based power to HAPS or satellites, to increase power budgets for high-data-rates and capacities, moving heavy equipment to the ground. This will enable always-on performance with reliable power delivery, free of the day-night cycle or limits of installed battery capacity. Main activities are: (1) AI-enhanced photonic power converter design & characterization (2) System modeling & validation for FSO data & power transmission (3) Free space optical data+power beaming demonstration using NRC’s ARTEMIS optical ground station.
Quantum networks work best when devices exchange quantum information directly without classical conversion. The Project will study free‑space quantum networking across fixed and mobile platforms. Current quantum‑secure links using low‑flux entangled photons have limited range and rate; a new method enabling secure links at all laser flux levels aims to extend both while preserving quantum information. Custom quantum transmitters and receivers emulating squeezed light will be developed, optimized, and tested across ground and ground‑to‑airborne links using NRC’s ARTEMIS facility. System perform
