Phycus Biotechnologies will develop and validate a next generation fermentation process for the sustainable production of glycolic acid—replacing petrochemical methods with a lower-cost, renewable alternative. The project integrates microbial engineering, process modelling, and pilot-scale demonstration to achieve higher productivity, improved strain stability, and further reduction in costs of goods.
Advance technology to produce bio-based glycolic acid on a commercial scale
Phycus Biotechnologies an innovative chemical products company that develops chemical solutions for its customers that want more sustainable options and improved performance characteristics over conventional, petro-based chemical products. Our fermentation technology converts naturally derived feedstocks from sustainable woody biomass and sugarcane into cosmetic grade ingredients. At the heart of the platform is a patent pending microbe that produces glycolic acid. This project is intended to help Phycus optimize its process to reach commercial production.
Phycus is advancing its innovative glycolic acid fermentation technology to support sustainable industrial applications in personal care, textiles, plastic films, coatings, and adhesives. This project focuses on improving process efficiency and scaling production in commercial-sized bioreactors, with the aim of enhancing product economics and reducing costs. Funding will accelerate the development and deployment of this technology, driving growth and supporting a transition to more sustainable manufacturing practices.
Phycus Biotechnologies has developed a manufacturing process for production biobased biodegradable polymers. This project will focus on the polymerization of alpha-hydroxy acids into linear polyesters for use in films, coating and packaging applications.
