The goal of this project is to create a scientific instrument for the characterization of single crystal materials. The instrument in question is an X-ray diffraction instrument known as a diffractometer and uses X-rays and a process known as X-ray diffraction to analyze the structure of crystalline materials
The goal of this project is to increase both the production volume and quality of Proto's X-ray Tubes by automating the existing production processes.
Proto will increase the revenue of its powder XRD line by implementing new lead-retention tools and strategies.
The goal of this project is to design, build, test, produce and make commercially available an Axially Focused miniature x-ray Tube (AFT). The AFT can be utilized in a compact residual stress diffractometer to gain valuable stress information in tight locations and geometries, inherent to military platforms which include but not limited to naval, aero, and land based systems.
The project will be used to further develop and expand Proto’s footprint in the defense sector. The relevant controlled goods certifications and cyber security procedures will be put in place to ensure data integrity and confidentiality are maintained. A significant effort will also be required from a marketing standpoint so that stakeholders in the various defense related industries are aware of Proto’s capabilities as well as the value these provide as applied to their specific issues. The project will also support research in already identified (currently unfunded) efforts so that technic
Upgrading the Feature Parity of Proto's Quantitative Analysis Tools
This project is about the integration of a robot with a Laue instrument to handle and place jet engine turbine blades for the measurement of single crystal orientation using the Laue x-ray diffraction technique. The integration of a robot will enable a higher throughput while eliminating full time operators who are prone to shoulder injuries from the repetitive movement and human errors. With increased demand for testing, higher accuracy and improved quality control up to 100%, this instrument will help reduce the testing cycle and the overall cost per component. This integration goes hand in
The goal of this project is to develop a fully-automated product for use in the quality inspection of turbine blades using the X-ray Laue technique. For some time, the missing link in bringing such a product to market has been the intervention of an operator when determining the orientations of the grain(s) being imaged. This project would build upon proof-of-concept examples in the literature, whereby a feed-forward neural network is trained to extract the orientations of one or more crystal grains from a synchrotron Laue image, and apply this approach to the analysis of laboratory Laue image
This project will focus on implementing an automated robotic systems to be programmed to take X-ray diffraction Laue measurements based on inputted part geometries, allowing for increased efficiency and reducing costs.
Youth Employment and Skills Strategy Internship - Improving Advanced Powder X-ray Diffraction Applications
Youth Employment and Skills Strategy Internship - Improving Legacy Code on our XRD Residual Stress and Laue instrument lines.
Youth Employment and Skills Strategy Internship - Improving Legacy Code on our Powder X-ray Diffraction instrument lines.
The hire will be working on developing a new X-ray Powder Diffraction Software Package for our AXRD powder diffraction instruments. This suite will have new analysis tools to help us be more competitive against our competitors. The internship is 6 months (26 weeks) in duration.
