Development of power efficient connectivity technologies for AI/ML in Data Centers
Development of next-generation data centre infrastructure that will double data processing capacity while significantly reducing its environmental impact and cost.
To establish a commercial-level manufacturing capacity to meet growing demand for cutting-edge optical engines.
The exponential growth of AI/ML data centers requires a shift to Co-Packaged Optics (CPO) to overcome critical power and bandwidth bottlenecks and drastically reduced the environmental impact of AI. This project will enable the development of a prototype of a next-generation Co-Packaged Low-power Short Reach Serdes optical engine for AI Compute Centres.
The current packaging technologies use a 2 dimensional approach where by the components are laid out on a 2 dimensional substrate and each component is connected to the adjacent component using traditional wirebonds and optical lenses. This approach worked well for low capacity components, however as the speeds go beyond 50Gb/s per lane, the capacities grow beyond 400Gb/s per module and the real-estate for such functionality shrinks, the packaging needs to move into 3D and the designs need to be matched to gain optimum yield and tolerance to process variations.
Germany ZIM project WATPHY with German partners Vanguard Automation and Fraunhofer to address the scaling needs of Data-Centres - components and processes will be developed for attaching laser diodes (LDs) and optical fibers to photonic integrate circuits (PICs). The processes will apply 3D-printed nano-optics (Photonic Wirebonds - PWBs). The processes will utilize separately bonded, burned-in and pre-tested lasers on micro-carriers for maximum post-attach yield.
The project is to develop a methodology to modify the optical phase of fabricated devices
Project MASCOT is developing an energy-efficient multi-wavelength laser source to enable next-generation Co-Packaged Optics (CPO), addressing the critical power consumption and connectivity demands of AI data centres.

This project is a feasibility study to analyze the Canadian AI ecosystem and identify key resources and deployment sites for a sovereign AI capability. The study will produce a plan for a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) demonstration of a "Sovereign AI Switch," complete with a risk assessment, a deployment timeline with milestones, and a proposed EUREKA-like framework to govern supply chain contributions and mitigate risks.
Project Summary: This project proposes a feasibility study of the establishment of a compound semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem in Canada composed of a foundry and all other elements required to produce known good and secure semiconductor devices. It also provides recommendations on where to focus attention in order to address shortcomings based on industry shared experience. The report proposes to setup a framework that follows Design Thinking methodology in approaching the ecosystem. It will review Best Practices in funding from existing frameworks like Eureka, NRC IRAP and IMEC.
Technical Feasibility of a low cost, high power Distributed Feed Back (DFB) laser architecture covering design and simulation as well as fabrication files and a limited number of prototypes that will allow characterization of the fabricated laser for key identified parameters demonstrating if the proposed designs meet requirements. It is expected that the project may require 2 to 3 iterations.
The purpose of the Canadian International Innovation Program (CIIP) contribution agreement is to support Canadian SMEs identify international partners in CIIP target countries for industrial research and development collaboration that has good potential for commercialization.
Participation in the NRC IRAP’s PIC Summit Europe mission held in the Netherlands, November 6-10, 2023, led by the National Research Council of Canada Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC IRAP) to develop international partnerships and potential project ideas for the 2023 Xecs Call for Proposals.
