Domoic acid (DA) is a significant concern to consumers of marine foods, given acute poisoning can be life threatening, and with the impact of low doses being cumulative over time, can cause cognitive disability and illness. At present, the only existing option for biotoxin testing in Canada is to send samples to a CFIA laboratory. Sensoreal Inc. aims to develop a novel microfluidic integrated electrochemical sensing device for the detection of DA in water, phytoplankton, and shellfish. The proposed method involves a simple sample preparation method that does not require cumbersome instrumen
A point-of-care solution that is highly differentiated from competing diagnostic systems. This solution will meet the evolving needs of healthcare in the 21st century, from emergency rooms to telemedicine.
Germany ZIM 15 - MycoSense : As part of the international consortium project “MycoSense”, this project will focus on developing an advanced, multiplex quantitative lateral flow assay for the simultaneous detection of multiple mycotoxins in animal feed, cereals, and processed foods. This innovative platform will enhance the dynamic range and sensitivity of detection, providing a cost-effective, high-precision, and rapid on-site screening tool. This will help ensure food safety and regulatory compliance in Canada and Germany by offering a superior alternative to current single-toxin or lab-based
Current COVID-19 diagnostics are lacking a complete picture of the disease and have limited sensitivity. Sensoreal’s solution would be the first serological immunity test combined with direct detection of the virus from a nasal swab in an accurate and portable system. This solution adds the benefits of direct detection to the promise of immunity monitoring. The ideal diagnostic would not only limit the spread of the disease, but also help to manage it and foster long-term economic recovery.
The UrineChip is a sample-to-answer urinary tract infection (UTI) diagnostic tool that provides results at the point-of-care. UTIs are one of the most common bacterial infections in companion animals and can result in permanent kidney damage if untreated. There is a strong need for a fast and specific test for UTIs in veterinarians’ offices.

This is a market study, focusing on competitor and swot analysis, and market / customer discovery in the marine biotoxin market.
Sensoreal is a start-up company developing point-of-care detection technologies for a variety of applications such as infectious diseases and shellfish sanitation. In May 2019, Canada became the first country to perform a rapid blood test at the International Space Station using Sensoreal’s technology. The candidate will be involved in the microfluidic design and testing of two projects, prototype development for detection of PSP toxins in shellfish and enhancement of the diagnostic tool for infectious disease.
The purpose of this CanExport SMEs agreement is to support small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) for activities related to export market development that are part of an export business case for a specific target market, particularly where activities are targeting departmental priority markets and sectors.
