Funding will support research and development to identify solutions to National Defence’s Challenge: Drone surge: Scaling tactical Uncrewed Aerial Systems manufacturing for modern defence. The Department of National Defence (DND) and the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) seek innovative, low-cost, attritable Uncrewed Aerial Systems (UAS) to address gaps in military readiness and industrial capacity.
Design and integrate an onboard detect-and-avoid sensor package into the Superwake SW-117 RPAS for automated detection and avoidance of crewed aircraft. This would provide regulatory approval by Transport Canada and the Federal Aviation Administration to fly RPASs with sensors beyond the visual line of sight.
Develop heated battery packs for a solar electric fixed-wing aircraft, the SW-117, to allow improved flight performance in terms of range, endurance and operational environment in the cold climates commonly found in Canada.
Development of a next-generation solar wing for a 24.9 kg fixed-wing RPAS to achieve multi-day endurance. The project focuses on the structural integration of PV cells directly into the composite wing during construction. This method increases the total solar array surface area by 50% compared to a post-installed method for the same airfoil. These improvements significantly increase the capability of Superwake's SW117 RPAS.

Increasing the capacity of Superwake through the design and manufacturing of improved cold-weather batteries with internal heating modules and developing custom integrated circuits for increasing reliability and reducing costs.
Superwake is developing a pilot training program to grow its remote sensing as a service business. The goal is to teach new pilots all the skills required to operate fixed-wing, long-range, electric drones with a 25 kg mass and a 5.3 m wingspan. Skills include mission planning, regulatory compliance, safely handling lithium-ion batteries, and manual flying with remote controls.
The Project will support development of intellectual property capacity within the Firm.
